New! 3/08

M4, Globular Star Cluster in Scorpio
  • Taken with the Orion EON 120mm ED Apochromatic Refractor. Ten 5 minute shots combined using the Hutech modified Canon 350D @ ISO400. Mounted on the Astro-Physics 900GTO, StarShoot AutoGuider. I'm usually not to keen on shooting star clusters but this was a nice early morning shot that filled up more of my frame than I thought (note that the shot is still cropped).

2/08

M51, The Whirlpool Galaxy (Revised)
  • Taken with the ITE/Intes-Micro 10" f/10 Maksutov-Cassegrain. Five 40 minute shots for luminance, 3x12 min red, 3x11 green, and 3x13.3 min blue using the ST-10ME with Custom Scientific LRGB filters. I've always wanted to shoot this galaxy with some serious image scale. The new 10" Mak is starting to stretch its wings :)

Mounted on the Astro-Physics 900GTO, ST-4 guiding. There are tons of little galaxies everywhere on this one so I had fun with it and labeled the ones the planetarium software could find.

03/07, Captured 01/07

NGC 3628, M65 & M66 The "Leo Trio" Galaxy Group
  • Taken with the Vixen 114ED refractor with a f/4.4 reducer at prime focus (~502mm). Ten 10 minute shots were combined using the modified Canon 350D at ISO 800. Mounted on the Astro-Physics 900GTO, ST-4 guiding. Check out the uncropped wide angle version, many little galaxies can be seen below, some are fainter than magnitude 16! I want to retake the Leo Trio portion with the Mak-Newt this year and get some nicer up-close detail on these beautiful galaxies.

New! 03/07, Captured 01/07

7/05

IC 1396 in Cepheus
  • Taken with the Vixen 130ED refractor at prime focus (860mm f/6.6). 90 minute exposure on Kodak E200, pushed two stops. Mounted on the Celestron CGE with ST-4 guiding, poor guiding this time around. Another pretty but faint nebula in Cepheus.

9/04

NGC 7023 (Iris Nebula)
  • Taken with the Vixen 130ED refractor at prime focus (860mm f/6.6). 90 minute exposure on Kodak E200, pushed two stops. Mounted on the Vixen Atlux with ST-4 guiding (A1's, and unknown field rotation on one side, sigh). This is a beautiful reflection nebula in Cepheus.. check out the span of dark nebulosity around it. I want to retake this on Fuji film for some bolder blue pickup. This is one of my favorite nebulas.

9/04

M33 (Pinwheel Galaxy)
  • Taken with the Vixen 130ED refractor at prime focus (860mm f/6.6). 90 minute exposure on Kodak E200, pushed two stops. Mounted on the Vixen Atlux with ST-4 guiding (A1s, but why the star drift?!?).

7/23/04

NGC 7000 & IC 5070 (North America & Pelican Nebula)
  • Taken with the Vixen 114ED refractor at prime focus (600mm f/5.3). 90 minute exposure on Kodak E200, pushed two stops. Mounted on the Losmady G11 with ST-4 guiding (A2s). Very little processing with color curves, the red & pinkish hue is pretty much what the film saw. Click here for the monster high-res version...ohh yeah.

7/23/04

M31 (Andromeda Galaxy, M32 & M110 included)
  • Taken with the Vixen 114ED refractor at prime focus (600mm f/5.3). 45 minute exposure on Kodak E200, pushed two stops. Mounted on the Losmady G11 with ST-4 guiding (A2s). I am beginning to improve my technique here & I was able to get a better scan from the film.
